There\u2019s Maui<\/em>, our pilot points jokingly across the Pacific<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who needs Maui on a day like this<\/p>\n\n\n\n

after weeks of rain and the longest winter<\/p>\n\n\n\n

when the northern sun finally, finally reaches us<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A day warm enough for porches and puttering<\/p>\n\n\n\n

around spaces abruptly returned from the snow<\/p>\n\n\n\n

baseball games and rusty bike rides better under blue skies<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How about the school year ends today<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summer\u2019s happening, even if spring never did<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plane\u2019s shadow trails us<\/p>\n\n\n\n

over grey whales and black swirls of herring<\/p>\n\n\n\n

we land on the same beach<\/p>\n\n\n\n

where years ago my dad\u2019s Piper flipped in the wind,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

my brother upside down next to him<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even after years and years of flying here,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I stay in amazement,<\/em> the pilot says. And it sounds<\/p>\n\n\n\n

like the answer to everything<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He digs razor clams while we wander past<\/p>\n\n\n\n

their open shells like a kid\u2019s drawing of purple butterflies<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We find bear tracks on white sand, white antlers in driftwood<\/p>\n\n\n\n

orange buoys, sun-glazed bottles, yellow floats<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What a mess people make of things<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What a beautiful mess<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What a feeling of smallness and wholeness<\/p>\n\n\n\n

wild places offer<\/p>\n\n\n\n

filling us,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

like grief,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

almost to drowning<\/p>\n\n\n\n

with love<\/p>\n\n\n\n
