Some things come easy, after all<\/p>\n\n\n\n

after this hard year<\/p>\n\n\n\n

we skiff past westside capes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

bare cliffs like the stone paws<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of mountainous sentinel lions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Past Cape Kuliuk and Cape Ugat,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

past places mapped<\/p>\n\n\n\n

by VHF call\u2014Bartenders, Broken Point,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noisy Island, Trap 6, Bear Gardens<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to Uganik Island,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

green all the way to the beach<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and wild roses all the way up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A weathered red cabin with summer-filled windows,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

beach gardens growing taller than the kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time and daylight enough<\/p>\n\n\n\n

for projects of whimsy\u2014pink outhouses, buoy swings,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

napping cabins and salmonberry bushes pruned<\/p>\n\n\n\n

into head-high mazes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the rain starts<\/p>\n\n\n\n

we sit on the porch eating salmon<\/p>\n\n\n\n

pulled straight from the smoker,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

muffins made with yesterday\u2019s oatmeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We warm our hands<\/p>\n\n\n\n

around hot coffee in old mugs, each one a story<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and between the stories, talk of fishing and weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Always talking fishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, by a driftwood fire,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

its easy heat reminds you<\/p>\n\n\n\n

how old friendships return you<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to yourself,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

how readily we believe<\/p>\n\n\n\n

we\u2019ll return next season<\/p>\n\n\n\n

our socks waiting in the drawer,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the dishes by the sink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
